PETER 2.0: Dr. Peter Scott-Morgan’s journey to becoming a cyborg

Dr. Peter Bowman Scott-Morgan, aged 61, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (a terminal illness) in 2017 – and only given two years to live. Enter PETER 2.0: Instead of accepting his condition, he decided to push the boundaries of science and become fully robotic (a cyborg).

This article series is dedicated to his journey to becoming ‘world’s first full cyborg’, known as Peter 2.0. The complete PETER 2.0 series

“Die as a Human – Live as a Cyborg”

Dr. Peter Scott-Morgan has teamed up with world-class organizations such as Intel, DXC Technology or Accenture, and scientists, engineers and artists, to use the most advanced robotics and AI to turn himself into a cyborg and deal with the degenerative illness that will eventually paralyze all but the movement of his eyes.

An electric wheelchair now enables to him to be upright, sitting or laid down; he has banked his voice on a computer and had his voicebox removed; and is fed through a tube and has a catheter and colostomy bag attached so he doesn’t eat or excrete.

The most recent phase of Dr Scott-Morgan’s transformation has been to make an avatar – a computer rendering of his face – which is designed to be controlled with artificial intelligence and look like him before he became ill.

Dr. Peter is now replumbed as a cyborg: Peter 2.0 is now online

The brilliant roboticist, author, and speaker is aiming to replace all of his organs with machinery. He will employ enhanced reality, virtual reality, exo-skeletons and maybe, eventually, an ability to exist completely outside his physical body.

“It goes without saying that all my physical interaction with the world will become robotic. And naturally, my existing five senses are going to be enhanced. But far more importantly, part of my brain, and all of my external persona, will soon be electronic – totally synthetic.”

The Scott-Morgan Foundation

“The Foundation is being formed to very explicitly and very publicly harness the power of innovation to thrive on change – even when the change is induced by MND.” said Dr. Peter in his welcoming speech at the DXC Innovation Centre, London, 14TH AUGUST 2019.

The Foundation will be a beacon of hope to those who currently have none.

The Scott-Morgan Foundation seeks to use artificial intelligence, robotics and other high-technology systems to transform the lives of those ‘restricted by age, ill-health, disability, or any other physical or mental disadvantages.

The illness

Motor neuron diseases (MNDs) are a group of neurodegenerative disorders that affect motor neurons, the cells which control voluntary muscles of the body. MND (also called ALS or Lou Gehrig’s) is characterized by stiff muscles, muscle twitching, and gradually worsening weakness due to muscles decreasing in size. Read more about MND: Wikipedia, the MND Associtation.

“MND hasn’t even begun to bring me to my knees. And even long after I’m locked in, I will still be standing tall” said Dr Scott-Morgan.
